Down Syndrome is genetic defect associated with the presence of extra material on the chromosome pair designated 21 ( trisomy 21 ).It is a combination of physical abnormalities and mental retardation.Instead of causing mental retardation , it also give a characteristic face and multiple malformations.About 30 to 50 percent of babies with Down syndrome also have congenital heart defects, and many have some visual and hearing impairment and other health problems. A child with Down syndrome may have eyes that slant upward , minimal squaring off of the top of the ear and a low bridge of the nose (lower than the usually flat nasal bridge of the normal newborn). The mouth may be small, making the tongue appear large. Some babies have short neck and thin hand and feet with short finger. The degree of mental retardation varies widely from mild to moderate to severe.
